Debate: The 8CANTWAIT Policy

Edit: June 7, 2020

Thank you Annie Ngo for sending me this!

This post explains why Campaign8 isn't what we want!

Intro

It seems like there are two very different sides to BLM. The side that wants to end police brutality and the side that wants to get rid of policemen/the system we have today.

Why is this? Isn't the problem police brutality?

We can all agree that police brutality is a problem. However, what isn't well known is that it's only a part of the problem. Our problem is systematic oppression and the police force is what carries out the system to the degree it's at today. There are lots of other people who also influence the system like corrupt politicians and greedy corporations.

I don't understand, what is systematic oppression? Sounds like a conspiracy...

To explain, let's go back to when slavery was first abolished in 1865. Not only did our government start implementing segregation laws but they passed "black codes"as well (source). Black codes were basically laws that only applied to African Americans that would warrant their arrest for things like gathering together after sunset, loitering (which would also apply to kids), not having proof of employment, and marrying white people (source). After they were arrested, they were then sent to private property to work as criminals. It was a new way to enslave people.

Okay but the civil rights movement in 1968 ended all of that right?

No, politicians went back on their apologies for the injustices made against African Americans using once again, a new way to get what they want. This time, they were super sneaky about it. Check out these quotes:

“The Nixon Campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the anti-war left and Black people. You understand what I’m saying? We knew we couldn't make it illegal to be against the war or Blacks but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and Blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did.” -John Ehrilchman, Nixon’s advisor (source)

“You start out in 1952 by saying n*gger, n*gger, n*gger. By 1968 you can’t say n*gger, that hurts you. It backfires. So you say stuff like forced-bussing, state’s rights and all that stuff. You’re getting so abstract now. You’re talking about cutting taxes, And all of these things you’re talking about are totally economic things. And the by product of them is Blacks get hurt more than whites.” -Lee Atwater, Reagan’s campaign strategist (source)

The Civil Rights Movement was in 1968.

The Nixon Campaign was in 1968.

The Reagan Campaign was in 1980.

I'll be sharing more later, stay tuned. For now, check out @dopqueenpheebs explanation for why it won't fix our problems!

And here's a short youtube video explaining systemic racism!

Our review on 13th, a documentary directed by Ava DuVernay that unpacks systematic oppression to its core: Link

If you have time, I highly recommend watching this! It goes into so much, you won't regret it.
